Domestic abuse during major football tournaments

Posted on the 25th June 2021

While England making it to the final 16 of the Euro 2020 football tournament is exciting for many of us, for some it could mean an increase in abuse at home.

Studies have found that reported instances of domestic abuse increased during major football tournaments with alcohol-related domestic abuse increasing by up to 47% when England win during an international competition.

With domestic abuse reports already higher in 2020 than previous years due to COVID-19 lockdowns, Paradigm was proud to become part of the Make A Stand campaign, developed by the Chartered Institute of Housing in partnership with Women’s Aid and the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance. The campaign supports and empowers people experiencing domestic abuse.
