Local debt advice service helps its milestone client

Posted on the 23rd June 2017

A free money advice service funded by the Paradigm Foundation has helped its 100th client.

Bucks Money Advice Service (BMAS), which offers free money advice to tenants living in Paradigm Housing properties, was jointly launched in April 2016 by the Paradigm Foundation and Citizens Advice.

It offers help to tenants in need by giving confidential money advice to people who may be in rent arrears or struggling to pay their bills.

Jane Harrison, Trustee for the Paradigm Foundation and Deputy Director of Finance for Paradigm Housing said: “Without the collaboration between Citizens Advice and the Paradigm Foundation, there would be more people facing homelessness and debt problems. By putting money management systems in place and helping people manage their budgets, we can stop debt problems spiralling out of control.”

Three main Citizens Advice centres in Buckinghamshire – Chiltern, High Wycombe and Aylesbury, are taking part in the project by providing benefit checks, budgeting and money advice.

Steve Baker, MP for Wycombe (centre of photo) attended the BMAS launch back in April 2016, and praised the service saying: “There is an enormous demand for services here and it’s crucially important that this service succeeds.”

In fact, demand for Citizen Advice’s money and debt advice services is highest in January and February across the UK, with one person contacting their nearest Citizens Advice for help every 11 seconds in January.

Jennifer Allott, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Chiltern said: “January is a great time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the future, not just for the next month but for the next year and beyond.”

Paradigm tenants can contact the Bucks Money Advice Service on 01494 770673 or through their rent officer.
