Supporting the FireKills campaign

Posted on the 11th February 2020

We are supporting the Home Office FireKills campaign, highlighting the everyday accidents that can cause a fire in your home.

Your smoke alarm is your best protection from fire, but would your smoke alarm save you? This advice published by the Home Office will help you get the facts:

  • working smoke alarms correctly positioned in your home can save your life
  • make sure you test your smoke alarms at least once a month
  • make sure you have smoke alarms on every floor of your home, including in each bedroom
  • do not put a smoke alarm in a kitchen or bathroom
  • don’t ever paint over a smoke alarm
  • have a plan for how you’d leave your home if your smoke alarms go off, and make sure everyone in your home knows what it is

You can read the governments fire safety tips for people in shared or rented homes who are at greater risk from fire here.

If you’re concerned about fire safety in your home, or the home of a more vulnerable friend or neighbour, you can get in contact with your local fire and rescue service who can offer advice, or a home fire safety visit.
