Fire doors are designed to contain a fire if one breaks out. They hold back flames and smoke for a set amount of time, giving people a chance to escape safely and helping firefighters control the blaze. They are often identified by a blue ‘Fire door, keep closed’ sign, and automatic closers on the back.
We check fire doors monthly, but you can help keep your community safe and check your fire doors in five simple steps:
- Look for a label to show that the door is certified and follow instructions.
- Make sure the door hasn’t been altered or damaged, with a window or ventilation grills.
- Check the gaps at the top and sides of the door are consistent and around 3 to 4mm. Make sure that seals are fitted at the top and sides of the door and that they are not damaged.
- Check all hinges are firmly fixed (you should have at least three), with no missing or broken screws.
- Make sure that the door shuts firmly and automatically from any position – never prop a fire door open.
