Paradigm Housing supports London Mayor’s new campaign to tackle rough sleeping

Posted on the 20th December 2017

On 15 December the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched a new campaign to help rough sleepers in London.

The campaign ‘No-one needs to sleep rough in London’ aims to provide services so that rough sleepers have somewhere to sleep, something to eat, someone to listen, and a way off the streets.

Services are available 24/7, providing emergency shelter when it’s freezing cold and also one-to-one support to help people rebuild their lives.

Welfare changes, soaring housing costs, and a shortage of affordable accommodation mean that more and more people are left with nowhere they can call home. Rough sleeping has more than doubled in London since 2010.

Paradigm Housing is redeveloping its temporary accommodation at Lea Bridge House in Leyton, to provide accommodation for an extra 100 homeless people in London. The new rooms were funded by the Mayor of London and provide accommodation for single people aged 25 and above.

Matthew Bailes, Chief Executive of Paradigm Housing, said: “There is a housing crisis in this country and we know that 8,000 people sleep rough on the streets of London every year. We’re extremely proud that our Lea Bridge hostel is helping some of those most in need. We welcome the Mayor of London’s ‘No-one needs to sleep rough in London’ campaign’.

During the coming winter months, the campaign will encourage Londoners to use StreetLink to connect rough sleepers to services. The campaign brings together a coalition of 18 homeless charities to form the London Homeless Charities Group. These charities have established a single donation point and are working together to fundraise to help those who need it most.
