Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
To make sure you’re safe in your home, your property may have been fitted with smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors.
Where fitted, you are responsible for understanding how your detectors work and for maintaining them.
Smoke and heat detectors
Smoke and heat detectors will sound if they detect smoke or heat above a certain temperature, warning you that there may be a fire in your home.
Where in my home are they?
On the ceiling. Where fitted, the smoke detector is in the hallway and the heat detector is in the kitchen.
How often should I test them?
Once a week press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds.
How do I maintain the detectors?
Your detector may be powered by the main electricity supply with battery backup or by battery alone. You should read the user instructions provided in the customer welcome pack for detailed maintenance instructions.
Clean your detectors with a vacuum cleaner to keep them free from dust.

Carbon monoxide detectors
Carbon monoxide, also known as CO2, is highly poisonous and can be produced if your gas appliance is faulty. You cannot see it, taste it or smell it – but its effects can be deadly.
A carbon monoxide (CO2) detector will detect carbon monoxide gas, to stop carbon monoxide poisoning.
A Carbon monoxide Detector must be fitted in the same room if you have an open fire or solid fuel burning appliance.
Where is my carbon monoxide detector?
Where fitted, it will usually be at a high level in the room, near your boiler.
How often should I test it?
Weekly. Press and hold the test button. The detector should emit a loud alarm.
