Burst pipes – stay prepared

As water pipes start to defrost over the next few days there is a risk of burst pipes.

Be prepared by:

• Locating your stopcock and checking it turns so if a pipe does burst you know how to stop the flow of water.
• Try to insulate external pipes with old cloths and towels.
• Keeping the heating on the same level day and night may help prevent burst pipes.

If a pipe does burst, please follow the advice below:

1. Turn off the water supply at the stopcock.
2. Open all taps to reduce flooding.
3. Soak up/block off escaping water with thick towels.
4. Call Paradigm to attend.
5. Turn off taps once pipework is repaired to avoid further flooding.

If a pipe freezes:

1. Turn off the water supply at the stopcock.
2. Check to see if the pipe has burst.
3. Slowly thaw the pipe with hot water bottles or a towel soaked in hot water, starting at the end nearest the tap.
