Staying safe in the heat

Posted on the 13th July 2022

While many of us are enjoying the sun this week, for some of us it can be a dangerous time of year. Younger children and older people are especially vulnerable in this heat, and with temperatures set to climb, it’s important for everyone to stay safe.

Stay shaded and cool

Avoid spending long periods of time in direct sunlight. Keep your curtains closed and windows shut during the hottest part of the day to keep the heat out.

Drink plenty of water

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep cool and prevent heatstroke, especially if you’re out and about.

Avoid cooking

Eating colder foods like salads and chilled cooked meats will help you combat the heat and stop you from needing to use your oven.

One of the biggest risks for especially vulnerable people in this weather is overheating. If you start feeling any of the following symptoms, seek medical help:

  • Breathlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Cramps
