More than 100 homeless people in London will benefit from new, temporary accommodation thanks to a massive regeneration project by Paradigm Housing.Lea Bridge House (pictured, left), on Lea Bridge Road in Leyton, London, provides accommodation for single people aged 25 and above.
The regeneration project, which has taken 18 months to complete, will see the number of rooms increase by 106, bringing the total number to 229.
Matthew Bailes, Chief Executive of Paradigm Housing, said: “There is a housing crisis in this country and we know that 8,000 people sleep rough on the streets of London every year. We’re extremely proud to have added over 100 new rooms to our hostel that will provide temporary accommodation to help some of those most in need.”
The new rooms at the scheme, which was funded by the Mayor of London Fund and the Greater London Authority, opened in April 2017, with residents moving in throughout April and May. They all have ensuite bathrooms and have been added to the existing main building which was built in the 1950s as police accommodation.
Delighted resident, Michael, 71 said: “My new room is fantastic – having my own bathroom will now give me privacy.”
Salado, 51, pictured with Chief Executive Matthew Bailes, got the keys to her room this week. She said: “I’m overwhelmed. I love my new room. Before this I didn’t have a home.”
Each room is also fully furnished, with every floor sharing a kitchen. The older rooms in the main tower block also share a bathroom.
Paradigm Housing, which has over 14,000 homes across Chilterns and South East, has completed the regeneration with Rydon, which delivers solutions for education, housing and healthcare.
Arunas Barista, Project Manager at Rydon, has overseen the project from beginning to end. He said: “We know that there is an acute housing crisis in the London region, with the total number of homeless people increasing year on year.
“As a company, we are committed to helping to build new homes. This project shows how an effective partnership with Paradigm can reap rewards for the local community.”
Residents at Lea Bridge House are referred by their local authority or homelessness charities.
